A Systematic Mapping Study of Diversity-Based Learning in Indonesia

Several studies have explored multicultural education through strategic-pedagogical approaches. However, information regarding the mapping of strategies or learning methods to comprehensively empower the values of multicultural education has not yet been identified. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the mapping of strategies or methods that have been implemented in learning to empower these multicultural education values. In addition, the mapping context of this study is directed to illustrate the interpolation among the identified strategies or methods. Through a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS), this research reviewed and analyzed 20 selected research manuscripts out of a total of 666 manuscripts. The results show that the domains of multicultural education in Indonesia are mapped into cultural identity, empathy/appreciation, democracy, justice, peace, and local wisdom. Meanwhile, learning approaches are categorized into several types, namely value clarification, social action, equality, participatory, integration, intercultural, and differentiation approaches. However, these approaches are not followed by an adequate mapping of learning methods. Methods such as dialogue, field practice, pairing, and cooperation still do not represent a sustainable learning process. In fact, the internalization of multicultural values requires sustained learning and should not be limited solely to classroom time allocation.
